Boiler Types:

Heat Only – Open vented Boilers

The are the most common boilers currently installed this is where you have a feed and expansion cistern usually in your loft; they connect to a vented hot water cylinder usually with a 3-port valve and pump. Boilers are floor, back and wall hung boilers and most common type of boiler currently installed. Some of these systems are still gravity hot water and can be upgraded to a fully pumped system.

System Boiler – Pressurised System Boiler

This is where there is no feed and expansion vessel the system is topped up using a filling loop and the expansion of the water in the system is offset using an expansion vessel other than being pressurised and no feed or expansion tank the system doesn’t vary very much from a Heat only open vented boiler

Combination Boiler – Pressurised System & Instantaneous Hot Water

With a combination boiler you can have a completely dry loft, if you do so wish allowing clean fresh water at all your taps hot and cold and mains pressure hot water at your hot taps, you only heat the water you need as the water is instantaneously heated as you call for the hot water.

Combination Boiler with a thermal store – Pressurised System & Instantaneous Hot Water – Some stored water

This is the same as a combination boiler except they have a small thermal store, storing anything form 20 – 50 litres of water so you have true instant hot water, no need to wait for the initial few seconds it takes to warm and these also allow much faster flow rates from the hot water taps.
